About Us

Teachers & Writers Collaborative (T&W) seeks to educate the imagination by offering innovative creative writing programs for students and teachers, and by providing a variety of publications and resources to support learning through the literary arts. T&W programs include writing workshops for students, professional development for teachers and educators, managing the NYS Poetry Out Loud competition, and publishing Teachers & Writers Magazine and other resources about the teaching of creative writing. Learn more about T&W at www.twc.org.

Teachers & Writers Collaborative was founded in 1967 by a group of writers and educators who believed that professional writers could make a unique contribution to the teaching of writing and literature. Those responsible for shaping T&W’s program and philosophy in the organization’s early years included June Jordan, Rosellen Brown, Victor Hernández Cruz, Kenneth Koch, Herbert Kohl, Phillip Lopate, Grace Paley, Muriel Rukeyser, Anne Sexton, and Robert Silvers.

Since its founding, T&W has published more than 80 books about teaching writing. T&W writers have brought writing residencies and professional development workshops to 760,000 students and 26,000 teachers in New York City schools. This depth of experience led the National Endowment for the Arts to call T&W the arts education group that is “most familiar with creative writing/literature in primary and secondary schools.”

WRITING WORKSHOPS T&W sends professional writers into schools and community sites to teach imaginative writing and conducts professional development workshops for teachers and administrators.

NYS POETRY OUT LOUD Poetry Out Loud, an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation, is a national program that encourages high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition.

TEACHERS & WRITERS MAGAZINE Teachers & Writers Collaborative (T&W) publishes Teachers & Writers Magazine as a resource for teaching the art of writing in kindergarten through college, as well as in non-classroom settings. The online magazine presents a wide range of ideas, approaches, and explorations related to T&W’s mission: “educating the imagination.”

A POEM AS BIG AS NEW YORK CITY A delightful book-length poem that spreads the wonder and joy that is New York, as told through its young people. As part of an unprecedented series of T&W poetry workshops, New York City kids were challenged to write about what it was like to live, learn, and play in New York City. The poems were collected and edited into this book, published by Universe (an imprint of Rizzoli New York).
