2013 BECHTEL PRIZE
Teachers & Writers Collaborative (T&W) congratulates Chris Belden, winner of the 2013 Bechtel Prize for his essay “Inside Words: How to Teach Writing in Prison.” Writer Susan Orlean served as judge for the 2013 award. Here’s what Orlean had to say about this year’s Bechtel Prize winner.
I was first drawn to the piece for the strength of the writer’s voice, cool and analytical, trying to sort out a situation—life in prison—that is highly charged and emotional. At the same time, the writer manages to provide, in the most economical way, glimpses into the inmates’ lives. It’s masterful and authentic.
Orlean selected “The Literature of Lockdown” by Eileen Shields as the finalist for the 2013 award.
The winning essay will be posted on the T&W website in early December and will appear in Winter issue of Teachers & Writers Magazine. Questions regarding the Bechtel Prize should be directed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
