Anthony S. Calypso is a writer, filmmaker, and actor from Nyack, New York. As a writer Calypso has published short fiction and nonfiction essays in several publications including The Caribbean Writer and the anthology, The Butterfly’s Way, edited by award-winning writer, Edwidge Danticat. In 2003, Calypso completed an MFA in Nonfiction at Sarah Lawrence College, where he studied with such writers as Lawrence Weschler, Susan Orlean, Hilton Als, Victoria Redel, and the poet Vijay Seshradi. In 2006, Calypso was nominated for a Pushcart prize for an essay published by The Saint Ann’s Review. As an actor, Calypso had his first speaking role opposite Danny Glover and Kimberly Elise in Beloved, based on Toni Morrison’s prize-winning novel.

During the summer of 2009, Calypso began to imagine food as a vehicle to explore immigration as a narrative within the Haitian immigrant communities. He has begun shooting Sos Pois, a documentary bout various Haitian culinary dishes. Calypso, the son of Haitian immigrants, continues to imagine and re-imagine the impact of leaving one country for another life, specifically for a new life in America. Calypso has spent the last three years teaching and conducting writing and workshops for children throughout the boroughs and is interested in guiding young writers towards organic moments within their respective nonfiction works.

In addition to teaching children, Calypso also teaches creative nonfiction at The New School. He lives in Brooklyn and, in addition to Sos Pois (which translates to bean sauce) is currently at work on a novel.
